I have to bring this one to an end, as I’m pretty confident that no one reading has seen either of the possibilities.

It was Phoenix (2014) or Return from the Ashes (1965) (both adapted from a novel written by Hubert Monteilhet). I’ve only seen the more recent of the two films (and indeed didn’t know of the other until this week), but the essentials of the story sound much the same for both.

It’s not a film that I loved, and suspension of disbelief might be an issue (you really need to just accept it and go with it), but it provides some very memorable moments in return.
