Pearple's Choice 2018--The End is Nigh...NOMINATION THREAD!

Hello Great People of Peartonia!

Nominations are now CLOSED! Please go vote in the voting threads! (And, if you think a nomination was missed, don’t forget you can write in candidates!)

Look, it’s the end of the year, and I don’t need to tell you what’s going to start happening soon.

2018 is nearly over, and…well, this happens every December. Just because we’re about to advance the year by +1, there’s gonna a be a whole megaton of reflection. Introspection. Looking back. Remembering and reevaluating. Navel-gazing. 'Tis the season.

Oh–and the lists. Wish lists, “best of” lists, Top 10 lists. Top 100 lists. Lists of lists. Franz Listzs (…I mean, if you count Weihnachtsbaum).

And I’ll tell you what–there’s really no point in resisting it. If this is all happening, well, gosh darn it, we might as well reflect on and make lists about something we actually care about. Something that matters.

No, not thatthese are clearly all signs of the Apocalypse, there’s nothing to be done about any of them.

But what we can do is talk about board games. And expansions! And which ones we liked more than others!

Keep in mind, this is no small task. According to the number one source for recording data about board games online, there were some 3700 games published, and some 1700 expansions!

So, go on, get to browsing, and see if anything jumps out at you.

Remember, nominate:

  • best boardgame or expansion released in 2018
  • best Kickstarter delivered in 2018
  • best pre-2018 game you played for the first time in 2018
  • best RPG released in 2018
  • best publisher as of 2018
  • best designer as of 2018
  • best whatever else you can think of (if there are enough mentions for a category, we can do it!)

  • Nominate as many titles/people/things as you like.
  • Nominations will close in 1 week on December 11th .
  • Voting will be done by forum in a new thread during the following week.

Okay, quick, the end is nigh–nominations away!

NOTE: One absolutely obvious and essential category we have been missing in year’s past is Best Art in a 2018 Game.

…thankfully, game art aficionado and friend of SUSD @Triangulate has a poll addressing this very thing on his excellent game art website More Games Please.

So, leave your nominations for best art on the More Games Please poll, and we can keep track of the results there!

Decrypto is probably the best boardgame I played that was released in 2018.
High Society is probably the best pre-2018 game new to me in 2018.
Vlaada Chvatil is still the best designer.
CGE are still the best publisher.
Outfoxed is the game most enjoyed and most requested by my daughter (under 5’s? kid’s?).

Sherlock Holmes consulting detective: Carlton House and a park edition was the only 2018 game I think I played this year. Not going to nominate it though, as it’s made me scream internally too often.

Secrets is my best new to me pretty 2018 game

I’d also like to nominate Paul for best person who happens to have left my favorite show award. Although I feel like it needs more words in the award title.

New game: Human Punishment, Renegade, Dice Hospital, Realm of Sand, Human Era
Kickstarter delivered: Black Orchestra, Star Realms Frontiers
New-to-me game: Xenon Profiteer, Onitama, Homeland

2018 was the first year that I seriously got into gaming, I didn’t get to try many new releases, but still a great year of board games

As it turns out, the best game and Kickstarter delivered in 2018 are the same!
I nominate Luxor for both of those.
Space Alert is the best game I played for the first time, which contributes to best designer being…
Vlaada Chvatil! I also would like to nominate Rüdiger Dorn, who made Luxor (and also Las Vegas, a personal favourite)
For publisher, I’d say CGE, Stronghold Games and Queen Games. I’ve heard issues about all of them, but I do really like the games they release!
Princess Jing for game with the coolest concept (The Mind too)
Onirim for biggest guilty pleasure (I love playing board games for the social aspect, but for whatever reason, I just love this single player game)

Excited for what 2019 brings!

Just a thought: Should there be a category or categories for “Best Games Coverage besides SU&SD?” Like “Best Podcast,” “Best Review Site,” etc.

If so I would vote “So Very Wrong About Games” for Best Podcast and “No Pun Included” for Best Review Site.
